A Visit with My Father on Mother’s Day

Please excuse the personal nature of this post. But, why have a blog if you can’t get personal every once in a while, right?

I travelled downstate about a three hours drive yesterday to visit my mom on her day. While there I was able to visit with my dad, of course. He is 76 years old and no one expected him to live this long. He had a massive heart attack some years ago and underwent bypass surgery. A few years before that, he experienced pain in his chest and underwent angioplasty to open up several blocked vessels.

He’s a career trucker, what those in the industry might call an “old hand.” Even at his age he still drives on occasion. Too much wanderlust in his blood I suspect.

Truckers aren’t known for eating a very healthy diet. They subsist on “hamburger steaks” smothered in gravy. It really is a miracle that he is still alive and fairly healthy. Which brings me to the real point of this post.

I’m extremely grateful for the advances in medical technology as it relates to cardiovascular disease. Procedures such as those my father experienced are commonplace nowadays. That has not always been the case. In fact, I remember years ago (back in the 60s in fact) a first cousin of mine that had to have open heart surgery to repair a prolapsed valve. Only a young teen at the time, she was shipped off to Chicago to undergo a procedure that is now being done at her local hospital.

I’m also grateful to organization like the American Heart Association, who paved the way for research that’s brought these advances about. Without their efforts, the technology would not be where it is today.

So, to my father on Mother’s Day, may I say “Dad, I love you and am very glad to still have you around!”
